Intro to Online Participatory Media: Zones of Emergency - Networks, Tactics, Breakdown

NO BOUNDARY INTERACTIVE is an open source studio space for the creative minds.

NO BOUNDARY INTERACTIVE is an open source studio space for the creative minds.

The concept of NO BOUNDARY INTERACTIVE is the creation of a digital and physical studio space for creative minds. The greater vision reaches out to various creative disciplines from literature, painting, sculpture, architecture, installation, graphic design, technology, advertisement, industrial design, music, film, etc. However, for the purposes of this exploration, the medium used will be TEXT.

Following the original concept of NO BOUNDARY INTERACTIVE, the project will involve a database of creative works of literature, which can be used by the creator as building blocks for his composition, which will the final composition will be added to the gallery and the database itself.

This project is an open source experiment with the creative mind in literature. As with other open source projects such as Wikipedia or open source coding, anyone can contribute and use, free of charge.

The concept can be explained in with an analogy to an experience in playroom full of Legos at a children’s museum. The Lego pieces are pre-made pieces (similar to the creative works in the NO BOUNDARY INTERACTIVE database), but the Lego pieces may be re-assembled to create new and more beautiful creative works. In this analogy, the playroom is the studio, the children the visitors, and the Lego compositions are the creative works. When a child creates a great Lego composition, the other children admire it; and the composition is left there for display until someone else produces a more elaborate piece, or until someone else needs a particular block for their own composition.

When a child moves on to elementary school, the Lego blocks evolve into the magnetic words on the refrigerator. Children start forming sentences out of the magnets of words and phrases. The concept of NO BOUNDARY INTERACTIVE is extremely similar. While this portion of the project focuses on text, the implications on expanding the medium across disciplines of film, sound, images, etc. are the strengths of this project.

NO BOUNDARY INTERACTIVE is a studio space, which is essentially a playground for creators.

The experience of NO BOUNDARY INTERACTIVE is different for every visitor because what you see and what you do is custom made by the visitor. One chooses from a database, the building blocks to work with, and in the studio/playroom space, make their own compositions. Their compositions are displayed for duration until it is replaced by someone else’s composition.

NO BOUNDARY INTERACTIVE is an open source studio space for the creative minds.

The first component of NO BOUNDARY INTERACTIVE is the database of creative works (from paintings, sculptures, architecture, installation, graphic design, technology, advertisement, industrial design, music, film, etc.) – similar to Wikipedia, but primarily focusing on creative works. The system will be open source and anyone can put their creative work for others to view as well as use in their compositions free of charge.

The second element of NO BOUNDARY INTERACTIVE is the creative platform – a studio, which enables visitors to compose their own creative work by combining works from the database, or a completely new work from scratch. This platform should be an easy design tool (something like Photoshop but easier – a program that is easy to navigate like paint….everyone knows how to use paint and notepad), allowing all age groups to use the system.

The final component of NO BOUNDARY INTERACTIVE is the gallery, or display of the creative works composed in the studio. These are accessible to the public and people will be able to leave reviews and comments for the works.

NO BOUNDARY INTERACTIVE – DIGITAL, the digital component of the project (as explained in the diagram map) will have a database, platform for creative work – a digital studio, and a digital gallery. Anyone with access to the web would be able to add to the database (although screening will be done to keep the content’s high quality – aka no personal photos, which should rather go on flickr) of high resolution images, videos, sound, etc.).

NO BOUNDARY INTERACTIVE – PHYSICAL, the physical component of the project, which is the focus in this class, is a real studio space open to visitors. The space will have a database of creative works, in which visitors can add to, but also use as pieces for their own compositions. The compositions are then displayed until a new visitor uses it for his own composition. The closest existing experience is a playroom full of legos at a children’s museum. The lego pieces are pre-made pieces (similar to the creative works in the NO BOUNDARY INTERACTIVE database), but the lego pieces may be re-assembled to create new and more beautiful creative works. In this analogy, the playroom is the studio, the children the visitors, and the lego pieces are the creative works. When a child creates a great lego composition, the other children admire it; and the composition is left there for display until someone else produces a more elaborate piece, or until someone else needs a particular block for their own composition. Similarly, the NO BOUNDARY INTERACTIVE is a studio space, which is essentially a playground for creators.

The experience of NO BOUNDARY INTERACTIVE – PHYSICAL is different for every visitor because what you see and what you do will is custom made by the visitor. One chooses from a database, what creative works they want to work with, and in the studio/playroom space, make their own compositions. Their compositions are displayed for duration until it is replaced by someone else’s composition.

NO BOUNDARY

The project, NO BOUNDARY was inspired originally by 2007/2008 Hollywood writer’s strike and its implications on the growing socio-economic concerns for artistic and intellectual authorship, ownership and property rights.

In the 21st century Cyberspace age, the new borderless medium (the internet) allows information and content to reach viewers and readers living in various parts of the world. Information that used to be inaccessible, unreachable and unattainable is a click away today. The implications of this phenomenon on art are significant. No longer is there a barrier between the wealthy, who can afford to see the art, and those who can not afford. Art is now for anyone, anywhere, whenever.

Furthermore, the Web 2.0 generation of participatory media, open source and social networking sites have changed the definition of authorship. Content can be easily created and put on the public network, by anyone who desires to. Once again, challenging the boundaries of the traditional concept of the single artist.

Finally, information technology has taken down the boundaries between various disciplines. Today, the fluidity between art, architecture, advertisement, technology, documentation, politics, etc. gives rise to the most fascinating creations. The hybridization of various expertises is essential to the creator. Many do not label themselves to one discipline but rather promote themselves as designers or creators….for what we produce today cannot be confined in the limits of a single discipline.

NO BOUNDARY hints at the various ways the creative mind transcends traditional boundaries – boundaries which used to exist between countries (which the internet allows to transcend), between disciplines, and between the creator and the viewer.

Each of the composition juxtaposes a famous traditional artwork (one that is easily recognizable from art history books, or general education) with an iconic real space. Sometimes the works juxtapose art to architecture, art to industry, Europe to America, famous painters to no-names. The hybridized compositions are examples of instances where traditional boundaries are eliminated to create something completely new.
